Notes

The finished heart needs to be around 6.5 cm and not too fat so can go in an envelope.

I worked these with two strands of dk size yarn together, so stuffing not essential if you have none

Worked with a tight tension with a 4mm hook, no holes so adjust hook if using different size yarn

Heart worked from bottom up, top is worked one side at a time

The first dc in every round is done into the first stitch below, the one the chain is in, so when the first stitch asks for an increase both dc go into that first stitch below

A stitch marker is essential to get the shape right- keep moving it into the top of the first DC of every round (not the chain)

Key

Inc = increase-two dc in same stitch

Dec=one decrease worked over next 2 dc stitches

Sl= slip stitch

Dc= uk double crochet

Ch=chain

Bottom of heart

Either make a magic ring or 3 ch , and slip st to make a ring

  1. 1 ch, work 4 dc into ring. Join with sl st (4)
  2. 1 ch, work 1 dc inc in each stitch. Join with sl st (8)
  3. 1 ch, (1 dc inc in 1st st, 1 dc) 4 times, Join with sl st (12)

Top part

Counting stitch you just joined as st 1, count to st no 15 and fold it flat against stitch 1, insert hook from st 1 through the back of st 15. Sl st to join the two halves, 1 ch

To work first half of heart:

  1. Coming back to st 1, do 1 dc in same stitch, put st marker in top. 1 dc in each of next 13 st. sl st to join back to top of 1st dc at end of round (14)
  2. 1 ch, 1 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 st, 1 dec over next 2 st, 1 dc in each of next 4 st, 1 dec over next 2 st, 1 dc in each next 3 st, join rnd with sl st (12)
  3. 1 ch, 1 dec over 1st and 2nd st, continue working decreases all the way round, continuing in  a spiral past end round, until the shape is rounded, until the top is only a small hole. Fasten off yarn leaving a long tail to sew up hole at end.

Second half

  1. Join new yarn at st 1 in the centre (next to other half), ch1, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc over next 13 st, join with sl st.
  2. Repeat row 2
  3. Repeat row 3, but stop and add stuffing if doing so, before hole gets too small. Finish off final stitches of round, fasten off leaving tail. Sew up both tops of the heart and darn the ends in.
